Waiting on Wednesday (16): Devine Intervention

Devine Invertention
by Martha Brockenbrough
Pages: 320
Publisher: Aurthur A. Levine books
Expected Publication: June 1st 2012

Summary:

There is a great legend of the guardian angel who travelled across time and space for the human girl he loved, slaying those who would threaten her with a gleaming sword made of heavenly light.
This is not that story.
Jerome Hancock is Heidi Devine's guardian angel. Sort of. He's more of an angel trainee, in heaven's soul-rehabilitation program for wayward teens. And he's just about to get kicked out for having too many absences and for violating too many of the Ten Commandments for the Dead.
Heidi, meanwhile, is a high school junior who dreams of being an artist, but has been drafted onto her basketball team because she's taller than many a grown man. For as long as she can remember, she's heard a voice in her head - one that sings Lynyrd Skynyrd, offers up bad advice, and yet is company during those hours she feels most alone.
When the unthinkable happens, these two lost souls must figure out where they went wrong and whether they can make things right before Heidi's time is up and her soul is lost forever.
Martha Brockenbrough's debut novel is hilarious, heartbreaking, and hopeful, with a sense of humour that's wicked as hell, and writing that's just heavenly

Why i want this book:

Don't you just think the cover is so cute and awesome! Have you read the summary? God! I want this book already!

One ordinary guy.
One female assassin.
Five targets by day break.

Thoughts before the read:
Love the title, cover and the summary and i think the story is going to be great.

Thoughts after the read:
It wasn't what i was expecting, it wasn't a good read and not a great fan, but there are good points about it.

Review:

Perry has a normal life, a perfect life. He's a student with really good grades and is on the top lists for undergraduate student at Columbia University, but when a exchange students arrives into Perry's life it turns into war. Gobi is not a European chick she's like the girl who sits in your class in the corner, talking to anyone and always has her nose in books. Prom, one of the most important date in high school and when Perry is with Gobi it looks good for a chance to go and get a chance with a gig in front of real people that night. But when Gobi changes their plan Perry discovers that Gobi isn't who she really is. With the lights on for the stage Perry discovers the hidden things of New York in a night.

Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick is a fun read with good action in it.

What i really loved about the book was the witty jokes that Joe made in the story. Most of the part of the story i was laughing full on and i liked that. Another thing that i really liked about the book was Joe's writing. It's just so simple but at the same time it's like you can see everything that the characters see.

The only drawback for me was that for some reason it let me down because i was hoping it to be something better. And, truth be told i actually left Au Revoir Crazy European Chick alone for a day or two.

And that's all folks. If you haven't read this book then do read it because i still think it's amazing! I can't wait to read the next book, Ciao For Now, Crazy European Chick.

On a little note i wanted to say that i really love the titles. Only by reading the titles i would have already picked this book and ready to settle in with this book.

Thoughts before read:
The synopsis sounds good and i love the cover! The big mystery is how did Heven get those scars?

Thoughts after read:
Mother of god! Did i just read that?

Review:

Are you joking with me. This is me:

Heven might sound like a normal girl but she isn't. She has scars on her face that nobody, not even her, knows how it got there. But when Sam turns up everything takes a different turn. Heven feels safe and secure around Sam. However, when events of surprises takes place nothing is normal about Heven's life anymore. Sam has secrets and so does the world about Heven.

Cambria takes a big plunge into the world of paranormal in this book. You can't stop reminiscing about it.

Masquerade has a lot of "Oh my GOD!" scenes and let me tell you you'll be doing it throughout of the book. You won't stop getting enough surprises even after you think you know everything. First, you get to know what Sam is and then you get to know why Heven is also important to the whole world and you're like: "whoa, we should take step back". Masquerade has a lot of twists and turns and you will love it!

The mystery in this book is too much to take. If Sam isn't a vampire, werewolf, ghost, fae, alien or any of them then what is he? God, that was what i asked every minute. The curiosity kills you. Until, i knew what Sam was it took me by surprise because no author has actually used that animal.

Heven as a character was good. She has a typical life, well, not the scars but yeah. She has normal friends and family. Even though, she has scars she went on with her life as it was and i think that was really brave, because i would have never done that. Sam, Sam, Sam. Sam is a kind of guy that you wouldn't fall for heels over head, but he isn't the type ignore, either. The character that most stood up to me was Heven's friend, Kimber. Kimber is Heven's best friend and she still hangs out with Heven. However, Kimber also has hatred for Heven and i liked that, because it is realistic in a sense.

In conclusion, people, if you haven't read Masquerade then you're missing on something really, really great! I advise that everyone should read it!

I can't wait for the next book.

Thoughts before the read:
The blurb makes the story sound interesting. I know this is going to be a good read and a funny one too.

Thoughts after the read:
This is amazing. Never expected this was coming.

Review:

This is mind blowing. The only thing is that how can Alyxandra write this flabbergasting story in just 227pages?

Eloise Hart lives a normal life like a average girl, but it all changes when a hot guy in a armour tells her to come with him and that it's not safe in a car park, in front of your friends and everyone you know. Then, when she gets kidnapped by Lord Strahan she knows that all of this is true.

Stolen Away was a quick and easy read with action, mystery, romance and faeries.

One thing that really surprised me about this book was that it was actually wrote in two people perspective. The two perspectives were from the main character: Eloise and her best friend, Jo. It took me by surprise because i would have never thought it could have gone that way, but i loved it! Both of the characters take big parts in the story and it makes sense. The book is split in two different stories. One, Eloise: her been a descendant of Hart family that is special in the fairy world. Two, Jo: best friend of Eloise and falls in love with Lord Strahans son, Eldric.

Stolen Away has plenty of romance Eloise and Lucas, but also Jo and Eldric, the dark, mysterious and handsome stranger that appears in the midst of Jo's way. I adored the relationship with Jo and Eldric, but he's also a bad boy! From the start of the book you can't think that he'll betray Eloise and the rest, but gradually after his character starts to unfold we see the truth about him and his family. My only complaint about the romance in this book was that Eloise and Lucas didn't have that much of a sizzle in the book.

To end this review i've got to say that Harvey is a great author and i hope to read more of her works in the future.

My rating:

About the author:

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.

Among her favourite books are 'The Wood Wife' by terri Windling, 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she’s smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.
Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with three dogs and her husband.

Heaven by Christoph Marzi

Publisher: Orchard Books
Published:  February 2nd 2012
Summary:

They'd kill for her heart.
The night that heaven lost her heart was a cold and moonless.
But the blade that sliced it out was warm with her dark blood.
A compelling urban fairy tale where love, death and the stars collide...
David Pettyfer is taking a shortcut over the dark rooftops of London's brooding houses, when he stumbles across Heaven: a strange, beautiful, distraught girl who says that bad men stole her heart. Yet she's still alive.
So begins David and Heaven's wild and mysterious journey-to find Heaven's heart, and to discover the incredible truth about her origins.

Thoughts before read:
This sounds amazing! Checking page number for the first time and already on page 101!

Thoughts after the read:
Getting emotional here. *sniff, sniff* This book is amazing. God i love this book. I could read this a million times!

Review:

This is what you call expecting and awesome.

David Petyfer lives in London and works in a bookshop delivering books. However, one day he finds Heaven on the roofs of London looking at the stars. She says she has no heart, but she's still alive. David can't do anything for her, but she's bewitching and alluring. With that they set off to find why Heaven is still alive.

I was really looking forward to read this one and it didn't disappoint me, actually it was better then what i expected. The story sets in London (ahhh, home sweet home) which is pretty interesting because it is set in the contemporary London, but, the story is also set in a London where a star fell and with it bought a piece if the sky, which i really wanted to know more because it's not part of our history. Not only do i fall in love with the London in the story, but also the characters. Some how, David and Heaven fit in together like a puzzle. And with Heaven in this circumstances i kept on praying for a happy ending.

The novel starts with a peculiar and unbelievable prologue and when the plot unfolds you get to know the surreal and dark parts of the story and the thing is you get accustomed to it.

In addition, to all of that, i also loved the modern fairy tale that Christoph made in this story, it sounds so believable but also at the same time so unrealistic.

I would love to go rambling on about Heaven, but, the thing is that i might burst and tell you everything about this book in clear detail and spoil it for you, so, to end this review i would like to say that you should give it a chance to read. I'm sure you would love it!

Review: Abandon by Meg Cabot

Last year she flatlined following an accident
During the time Peirce saw a dark world and met a mysterious, irresistible boy.

Now that boy, John Hayden, has turned up at school. Every time she sees him Peirce finds herself in terrible danger. Yet she's still drawn to him.

John wants to take her back to the place she fears the most: the Underworld.

The question is, why?

Thoughts before the read:
oh my god! This is going to be amazing! Just read the blurb!

Thoughts after the read:
Mmmmm, OK. Not a great fan, but i would like to read the next book in the series.

Review:

To start off i have never, ever, read Meg Cabot works in my whole life. Yep, i know what you are thinking. "where have you been, girl?!" However, i have tried to read her works, but they just don't peak my interest. On the other hand, Abandon is different. Abandon, is about a girl who has been dead and seen a mysterious (and yummy, in my thought) boy when she was on a "flatline". Well, that peaks my interest. Next, the boy, John Hayden, wants her back and keep her in the Underworld. That's right THE Underworld. Not a tour around the Underworld like: "oh, and that's Satan's bedroom. Uh i know right, he has no taste what so ever!" Nope not like that! So, then, i was like: "i am getting this no matter what!"

*Spoiler alert! Spoiler alert! Spoiler alert!
Abandon, is about a girl-Peirce-who has died before and when she dies she meets a "mysterious" and "irresistible" boy. Which you later find out that his name is John Hayden and he rules the Underworld. At that time, Pierce is accompanying John he gives Peirce a necklace to protect herself because she is always in danger and then Peirce chucks tea at him to get away. (Tea! Tea! It only takes tea to get away from the ruler of the Underworld. God sake they need to do a check up on this guy. I mean he's the ruler of the Under world! Can't he magically make armies of bones and magically make fire appear out of thin air?) Then, when Peirce gets back she gets in a lot of trouble and then John is her savour like 2 times. Now, in present, she lives with her mum on a island. Oh, and then she figures out that the Furies are after her. (wow, babes, run for it!)
*spoiler end.

Review: Wither by Lauren Destefano

Wither (The Chemical Garden #1)
by Lauren DeStefano
Pages: 358
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Published: March 22nd 2011

Summary:
What if you knew exactly when you would die?

Rhine Ellery is 16 and she only has four years to live.
A blotched attempt to create the perfect human race means that men die at 25, and women die at 20. Young girls are been abducted and forced into polygamous marriages in a desperate bid to keep humanity ahead of the disease that threatens to eradicate it.

When Rhine is kidnapped, she is sold as a bride to Linden, a rich young man with a dying wife. Even though he is kind to her, Rhine is desperate to escape her gilded cage-and Linden's cruel father. With the help of Gabriel, a servant she is growing dangerously attracted to, Rhine attempts to break free, in what little time she has left.

Review:

Wither is a great story but in my opinion i think its too slow of progress. To my disappointment Wither was not what i was hoping for. The plot was slow and boring. From the first sentence in the book i was hooked but after awhile i started to feel disappointment. The runaway part is only at the end of the story, even though, it is to hook the readers.

However, on the plus side, I loved the beginning its hooking. I also love the virus; it sounds real. The virus happened because people wanted to get rid of cancer and now that they have there is a consequence. Now, men live to the age of 25 and women at 20. Rhine is 16 and she has been kidnapped to be sold as a bride, with other girls. The only ones who survive are Jenna and Cecily.

Gabriele is not a boy you would go for and, neither is Lenden. Gabriele is ordinary and not like boys authors for YA chose. Not big and handsome, not drooling or swooning over. However, he's cute and normal. Just like any other boy surrounding you. This is what i liked about Wither; there was a realistic idea that you could find someone like Gabriele. Another thought about Wither is that Rhile sounds like she is actually falling for Lenden, rather than Gabriele.

All the characters in this book is realistic. Rose, the dying wife of Lenden is brave:; she's dying because of the virus. Jenna, the other wife of Lenden that came with Rhile is a brave woman as well. Cecily, is the other wife of Lenden who also arrived with Rhile; She's childish and young, but she likes Lenden the best. Gabrielle is normal, cute and sweet. Lenden is kind and caring, but doesn't know anything about what his dad (Vaughn) does. Vaughn's character is deadly and every time he's described in the book my hair stands on the back of my neck. What he does is sick.

Wither was not what i was hoping for, but i loved the originality in this book. Lauren is a great author and i would love to read the next book-Fever!

Pleas, sir, can i have some more?
