Review:

*Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers!

I actually have a history with this. I used to see White Cat in every book (well, almost) i used to read. It would be always be at the last few pages where i would always read "You're only a fingertip away from another world." Back then i thought: "mmm... OK it sounds like good read". When Black Heart (3rd book in the Curse Worker series) was released i finally researched it on Goodreads. I then found out it was by Holly Black and i was like: "isn't that the author that wrote The Spiderwrick chronicles?" Finally, I had made my decision that i had to get it. So, here i am writing a review of White Cat.

Cassel is like everyone in our world, except, in his world he's the odd one out. He's not a "Curse Worker", like his whole family. One of the things that made me interested in White Cat was the male POV. I couldn't really get Cassel most of the time. Maybe, it's because i'm in a males POV. Anyhow, i still liked to watch through his eyes. Lila, the girl he loved and killed i did kinda get. I was happy that she didn't forget her objective. She still wanted to be the head of her family when her father died and she still wanted to kill Cassel, for revenge. My other character that i have to talk to is Cassel's mother. Cassel's mother is my favourite character, because she was the only character that i could really imagine in real life.

The storyline is a different matter. It made me fall in love with it when i first read it. It is set in an alternative US where certain people have supernatural abilities, they are called "curse workers". There are a variety of different "Curse Workers". Some can control your dreams, some can control you and some, some can even change you into different objects. They can do this with just a touch. That's why a bare hands are like knives. Cassel, our protagonist, is not a "Curse Worker" which i doubted for a long time and in the end i was right. In addition, i also loved the criminal side of the "curse workers". Holly Black gave me what i needed of the criminal world of "Curse Workers" which i found really interesting. I would love to find out more about the criminal side in the next book. Despite loving the story i thought that it was slow paced for me. The only adrenaline that i felt was the ending. On the other hand, i really liked Holly Black's writing. Her description especially.

In conclusion, White Cat did and didn't meet my expectations. Even though, i didn't connect with Cassel i thought that all the character had something in them that made them real. I also thought that it was slow paced, but it all goes upwards with the storyline. Despite the bumpy ride in White Cat i'm looking forward to read Read Glove.

Also Known As by Robin Benway
Pages: 320
Publisher: Walker
Pub date: February 2013

(From Robin's blog.)

Why i'm waiting:

I adore Ally Carter's works, which are about spies and thief, so it's no wonder i chose Also Known As by Robin Benway this week. When i read "gifted teenage safe cracker" and "spy" i had already clicked "to read" on Goodreads.

What are you waiting on?

Review: Prowl by Amber Garza

Prowl (Prowl Trilogy #1)
by Amber Garza
Pages: 216
Publisher: CreateSsace
Pub date: January 20th 2012

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Mackenzie Smith is sent away to spend a boring summer at her grandma's. But then she meets Wesley. He tells her exactly what she wants to hear and has information about her past that no one else knows. It's almost like he can read her mind.

Only Wesley isn't who he seems.

By the time Mackenzie discovers his true identity it may be too late. She's in too deep and he won't let her go. Now Mackenzie must call on the strongest power of all in order to save her life.

Review:

*Given a copy in exchange for a honest review.

Frustrating and likable. That's how i would describe Prowl. There were things that frustrated me, but, at the same time, i was really interested in some things. Mackenzie is going over to her grandmother's for the summer. She thinks it's the best choice, after all, her mom doesn't even look after her. When she arrives at her grandma's it's all better until she meets Rhiannon her summer goes all wrong. Rhiannon introduces her to witch craft and the Ouija board. Mackenzie can't help but search for her dad through the spirit world and then she meets Wesley, a spirit. He tells her what she wants to know. Issac, the boy next door, tells her to not to trust witchcraft.

I think, the thing that really frustrated me was Mackenzie. She was so childish and annoying. Well, OK she was fine sometimes, but sometimes she was so stupid and it was so frustrating enough that i wanted to bang my head to the table. It was obvious that Wesley was wrong and doing things you shouldn't be and she was just ignoring it. If it was me i would be getting the hell out of there! *breathe in, breathe out* Anyway, moving on. The relationship between Mackenzie and Issac i was really worried about because i didn't want it to be insta-love. I was really glad when it wasn't. I liked Mackenzie and Issac together, however i felt like they didn't see much of them together. I would have loved to see if they were together more.

The plot and the writing were much better than the characters! Amber kept me hanging on the mystery of who Mackenzie's dad is and kept me guessing. And the shivers that Wesley gave me! I know that i will never play with Ouija boards (even though i wasn't going to). Definitely. Prowl does have Christian overtones, so i wouldn't recommend this to everyone. I didn't mind as i love learning about different cultures.

Overall, Prowl was a enjoyable read, even though i didn't connect with the character but it did keep me interested with a good plot. I would recommend this to people who are more interested in culture; Prowl isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Well, well, well? Isn't it so gorgeous! I haven't actually read this series but i might as well get started, because it sounds like my kind of book.

Blood Doll (The Vampire Agápe #3) by Georgia Cates

Solomon Alexander has faced huge obstacles during his existence, but they’re nothing in comparison to the one he’s about to hit head on. As leader of The Savannah Compound, part of Sol’s new position in the Coven of Landra is to guide the transition of fledgelings, newly turned vampires. It’s his job to save the unsavable. Being a Landra is what he’s done for over a century and he’s damn good at it, but everything he knows, practices and teaches is threatened when he is forced to drink from Avery Ferrand, a Blood Jewel.

She wanted him to and now she finds herself being drawn to Solomon in a way she shouldn't. As Avery’s desire to be closer to Solomon grows, she finds herself considering something more dangerous than being found by the dangerous covens hunting her...asking Solomon if she can become his Blood Doll.

Waiting on Wednesday (25): Katya's World

WAITING ON WEDNESDAY is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Katya's World by Jonathan L. Howard
Pages: 320
Publisher: Strange Chemistry
Pub date: November 6th 2012

Synopsis:

The distant and unloved colony world of Russalka has no land, only the raging sea. No clear skies, only the endless storm clouds. Beneath the waves, the people live in pressurised environments and take what they need from the boundless ocean. It is a hard life, but it is theirs and they fought a war against Earth to protect it. But wars leave wounds that never quite heal, and secrets that never quite lie silent.

Katya Kuriakova doesn’t care much about ancient history like that, though. She is making her first submarine voyage as crew; the first nice, simple journey of what she expects to be a nice, simple career.

There is nothing nice and simple about the deep black waters of Russalka, however; soon she will encounter pirates and war criminals, see death and tragedy at first hand, and realise that her world’s future lies on the narrowest of knife edges. For in the crushing depths lies a sleeping monster, an abomination of unknown origin, and when it wakes, it will seek out and kill every single person on the planet.

Why i'm waiting:

Adventure at sea? AND Pirates?! Did it tell you how much i love pirates? I frickin' love them with all my heart! If i could i would be one! So yes without hesitation i am adding it to my TBR pile and you should as well!

Review: Slide by Jill hathaway

Slide (Slide #1)
by Jill Hathaway
Pages: 250
Publisher: HarperCollins UK
Pub date: March 1st 2012

Synopsis:

I see though the eyes of a killer...

Vee Bell hates having narcolepsy. But collapsing at school is nowhere as bad as the truth - when Vee passes out she slides into other people's heads and ends up seeing through their eyes. Then Vee finds herself in the head of a killer. Standing over the body of a cheerleader.

Now another cheerleader is dead, and everyone is a suspect. Struggling to understand her terrifying and unwanted 'gift'.

Vee is tangled in a web of secrets, lies and danger...

Review:

With mystery, romance and a killer on the loose Slide was keeping me on the edge. I was even biting my nails! Vee has narcolepsy. But she doesn't really sleep when her narcolepsy attacks. She 'slides' into people, when she has an object that is precious to them. And when she does 'slides' she sees through the person's eyes. She hasn't told anyone about it expect her father, but he didn't believe her. Even her best friend, Rollins, doesn't know.

Vee was a strong character. She hid her 'gift' pretty well. She was independent and she even kept her family together when her mother died. she held her head high, although her past in high school was hard. Rollins, her best friend was cute and adorable. He helped Vee in spite of his own problems. Zane, the new-guy, was nice but i didn't like him much and i find that Rollins is much better than him. The romance between Vee and Zane was fast paced. From the first time Vee talked to him she was already falling for him. Then, when they said their feelings to each other it just jumped into a relationship. At the end, when Vee actually found the right man, i was very happy. I'm looking forward to see how their relationship goes in the next book (Imposter).

Jill Hathaway kept me flicking through pages as if my life depended on it, regardless, of the slow start. The concept of 'sliding' was a fun way to see through the murder mystery. I thought i had got the murderer but Jill Hathaway kept on throwing in some more twists and turns into the mystery. In the end, when the mystery was finally solved i was surprised to see who the murderer was and how everyone was, somehow, involved into the two deaths.

Overall, Slide was a fun read with interesting characters and a good story line, despite the slow pace at the start.

Review: When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle

When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle
Pages: 352
Publisher: Simon & Suchesters Children's Book
Pub date: April 26th 2012

Synopsis:

In this intensely romantic, modern recounting of the greatest love story ever told, Romeo's original intended--Juliet's cousin Rosaline--tells her side of the tale. "What's in a name, Shakespeare? I'll tell you: Everything.
"Rosaline knows that she and Rob are destined to be together. Rose has been waiting for years for Rob to kiss her--and when he finally does, it's perfect. But then Juliet moves back to town. Juliet, who used to be Rose's best friend. Juliet, who now inexplicably hates her. Juliet, who is gorgeous, vindictive, and a little bit crazy...and who has set her sights on Rob. He doesn't even stand a chance.
Rose is devastated over losing Rob to Juliet. This is not how the story was supposed to go. And when rumors start swirling about Juliet's instability, her neediness, and her threats of suicide, Rose starts to fear not only for Rob's heart, but also for his life. Because Shakespeare may have gotten the story wrong, but we all still know how it ends....

Review:

I knew that when i read the synopsis of this on Goodreads that i had to read it. Who wouldn't want to see Rosaline's side of the story from the greatest love story of the "Star-crossed lovers"?

Rosaline is head over heels for Rob, her best friend since kids. And they're trying to figure out what to do. But it all goes wrong when Juliet is back, Rose's cousin. Rose hasn't seen her for ten years. When Rob sees Juliet he tells Rose that it feels like fate. Maybe it is.

"She looks up at me, and there are new tears in her eyes, but they are not bitter or angry. They're filled with something else entirely. Something like love. And i think, for the first time in ten years, that we may be alike after all."

First of all, it struck me after a few chapters (acts) that Rose and i are similar. She forgives easily, keeps her feelings in and doesn't speak much unless she has to. I think Rose is the closest character to me that i have ever encountered. I forgave and felt sorry for Juliet when i got to know more about her. I did love that fact but, I also thought that Rose had to step up a bit. She said that she felt fine when Juliet took Rob from her, which obviously she was not fine with.

The plot is like what Romeo and Juliet is suppose to be. ("Because the greatest love story ever told might not be the right one, but we all now how it ends".) The only difference is that we see Rose's side of the story and that it's a modern version. Rebecca Serle stirs our feelings for Rosaline. She makes us think that Rose and Rob were supposed to be. But after a while we see that maybe Shakespeare did get it right. This is what made me cry. I knew that it will end like it is Romeo and Juliet. But i did feel happy for Rosaline's happy ending. I think, if i don't stop here i will spill it all and spoil it for you, so, i have to end this review.

To conclude, i think i will never see Romeo and Juliet ever again. I will always see Rosaline. I would definitley say check this out because this has a heart-throbbing romance that you will love!

My rating:

(4.5)
Comes with minor flaws but i do recommend it.

Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer #1)
by Michelle Hodkin
Pages: 452
Publisher: Simon & Suchester Children's Publishing
Pub date: September 27th 2011

Synopsis:
Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger. She wakes from a coma in hospital with no memory of how she got there or of the bizarre accident that caused the deaths of her best friends and her boyfriend, yet left her mysteriously unharmed. The doctors suggest that starting over in a new city, a new school, would be good for her and just to let the memories gradually come back on their own.

But Mara’s new start is anything but comforting. She sees the faces of her dead friends everywhere, and when she suddenly begins to see other people’s deaths right before they happen, Mara wonders whether she’s going crazy! And if dealing with all this wasn’t enough, Noah Shaw, the most beautiful boy she has ever seen can’t seem to leave her alone… but as her life unravels around her, Mara can’t help but wonder if Noah has another agenda altogether…

Review:

Hi, guys! I'm starting the week with a review. I've been holding this review up because i don't know how to bring justice to it. It left me completely speechless when i was finished with it. Anyway, here it is...

I didn't know what to expect because there was a lot of positive reviews for this. When i first read the blurb i thought it was an ordinary thing where Mara comes back as herself before the death of her friends and her boyfriend with help from Noah. But, no, i was totally, totally wrong.

Mara doesn't know what happened. She just doesn't remember anything from the incident. Even though, she was there when they died. After the incident Mara and her family moves away. Her mom thinks it's better for her, but in reality it isn't. She keeps on seeing Rachel (her best friend), Claire (her "friend") and Jude (her boyfriend), who all died in the incident. Everything has changed since that incident. Then she meets Noah Shaw at her new school, the schools bad boy.

From the story line i didn't know what to expect of Noah and Mara's relationship. Noah was too normal for Mara. But then we learn that Noah has big secrets that's he's keeping as well. I couldn't stop flicking pages to know what was going to happen next. And just when i thought the mind-blowing attacks were done there was one more thing that blowed my mind even more.

And oh my, Noah Shaw! I was literally melting and giggling when it came to him! No one can resist a bad boy! And the cherry on top? He's got an accent! *Swoon* This was me (and i'm sure everyone else was as well):

2nd step
1st step.

3rd step
*I don't take credit of these pictures.

Unfortunately, even though i loved The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (and Noah Shaw!) there is one thing that stands in the way of giving it a 5 star rating. The one thing that stood in the way was the slow paced until the middle of the book. At the start i was hooked but then it just became slow paced for me until the middle of the book. However, i still think that many people will love The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. Michelle Hodkin keeps you in a knot because of the mystery and suspense. Even after reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer you will be screaming for more and pulling you hair out with rage.

My rating:
(4.5)
Comes with minor flaws but i do recommend it.

About the author:
At the age of sixteen, Michelle Hodkin lost the rights to her soul in a poker game with pirates just south of Natchez. Shortly thereafter, she joined an acting troupe and traveled the world performing feats of wonder and mischief. She has been seen on stages nationwide and earned rave reviews for her one woman performance of Titus Andronicus before writing The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, her first novel which is available now. The sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, hits shelves October 23, 2012, and the third book in the trilogy, The Retribution of Mara Dyer, hits shelves Fall 2013. Michelle currently lives with her three pets and may or may not be a reliable narrator of her own life. *From Goodreads.
